I’m about to take a brief break from blogging as I head into the final few weeks of work on this draft. I’ll be back soon with some Halloween makeup fun, a cover reveal for SHADOW & BONE, and more additions to Products I Love and Marvelous Items.
For now, I want to encourage you to check out this brilliant and fairly heartbreaking post by Laura Hudson at Comics Alliance titled The Big Sexy Problem with Superheroines and Their “Liberated Sexuality”. Even if you don’t give a damn about comics or superheroes, the post is worth your time. In it, she addresses some of the troubling issues raised by the release of two new books from the “New 52″ relaunch of DC Comics, and she really nails what it’s like to be a girl who loves superhero comics, but also feels betrayed and alienated by them. If nothing else, scroll down and read the ending where she breaks down the male gaze and her experience as a reader in the clearest of terms.
There are too many good points in the post to share here, but since we’ve talked superheroine costumes on this blog before, I had to leave you with this:
“On the ground, we see how the editors and writers and artists have chosen to dress a male Lantern, and standing above him we see how they have chosen to dress a female Lantern… we’re never going to see a major hero like Hal Jordan in a costume like one on the right as imagined by Deviant Artist Bionarri.”
Now, I must don heels and monokini and head back into the bunker. See you on the other side!
